The Long Beach Jail and Courthouse

In the city of Long Beach, law enforcement is handled by the Long Beach Police Department. This is the second largest municipal police facility in Los Angeles County.

In general, individuals who get arrested in Long Beach are taken to and booked at the Long Beach City Jail, located at 400 West Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802, (562) 435-6711.

One of California’s largest city jails is the Long Beach City Jail. The Criminal court Process in Long Beach

Generally speaking, anyone arrested for  a criminal offense in Long Beach will have the option to pay bail to get out or possibly get an on recognizance release. If the District Attorney decides to prosecute, the defendant’s next responsibility is to show up to court at their arraignment.  In many cases, judges waive the defendant’s appearance as long as they have private counsel appearing on their behalf.

It is paramount that defendants appear at all their scheduled court appearances. For those who don’t show up, the judge will order that a bench warrant be issued for that defendant’s arrest. As soon as a bench warrant is outstanding, the defendant becomes vulnerable to being arrested at any point in time.  Judges are usually agreeable to recalling the warrant in cases where the defendant or their defense attorney files a “motion to quash the warrant” and appears at a court hearing.

If at all possible, defendants are strongly advised to hire private counsel instead of relying on a public defender.

Defendants who do not have the financial resources to hire their own attorney will be assigned a public defender.  In such scenarios, the defendant is expected to appear at every court hearing in person.

After the arraignment is over, the case enters the pretrial stage. At this point the defense attorney investigates the facts and details of their client’s case for any weak links in the state’s evidence. This is the point at which the defense attorney attempts to negotiate a resolution with the prosecutors in hopes to avoid trial. In some situations, the defense attorney can persuade the District Attorney to reduce or dismiss the charges.

If the defendant chooses to enter a plea agreement, or if the defendant is convicted following a trial, the judge will hand down a criminal sentence. In some matters, defendants with a criminal conviction might be able to avoid any jail time if they agree the terms of a probation period and they submit to all the probationary terms. Usually, terms include paying a fine, avoiding alcohol consumption, and not getting any more arrests during the probation period.
