Nassau County Immigration Lawyers
Thanks for visiting Spodek Law Group – a second-generation law firm managed by Todd Spodek. We have over 50 years of combined experience representing Nassau County immigrants from Hempstead to Garden City, from Freeport to Glen Cove. Our immigration attorneys have handled thousands of cases since 1976, defending clients through every administration, every enforcement wave. You know our work – we represented Anna Delvey in the case that became a Netflix series, and we handled the Ghislaine Maxwell juror misconduct case.
If you’re an immigrant in Nassau County in 2025, you’re facing the most aggressive local enforcement environment in New York State. Nassau County signed the most aggressive type of 287(g) agreement with ICE – the Task Force Model. ICE is deputizing 10 police detectives in Nassau County to help conduct mass deportations. Nassau County is home to about 50,000 undocumented immigrants – and local police now have federal immigration authority.
You need Nassau County immigration lawyers who understand what this 287(g) agreement means for you and your family.
Nassau County’s 287(g) Agreement – What Changed in 2025
In March 2025, the Nassau County Police Department signed the most aggressive type of 287(g) agreement: the Task Force Model. This gives deputized Nassau County officers broad authority to question residents’ citizenship status and make arrests without a judicial warrant.
Former President Barack Obama discontinued this “task force” model over a decade ago because of concerns about racial profiling. ICE only revived it recently. Nassau County was the first in New York to sign on.
What does this mean for you? A traffic stop by Nassau County police can turn into an immigration arrest. A noise complaint at your home can lead to ICE detention. Nassau County police – not just federal ICE agents – now have immigration enforcement authority.
Seven jails booked nearly 2,800 people arrested for immigration reasons in the first seven months of 2025, up from only 500 in all of 2024. Nassau County is a major contributor to that increase. ICE pays Nassau $195 per person per day for detention.
The Legal Challenge Against Nassau’s 287(g) Program
Immigrant rights groups challenged Nassau County’s partnership with ICE, arguing that the 287(g) agreement violates immigrants’ rights and enables racial profiling. The lawsuit is ongoing. If you’ve been affected by the 287(g) program – if Nassau County police questioned you about immigration status, if you were detained based on immigration status – our attorneys can help you understand your rights.
Nassau County’s Immigrant Population
Nassau County is home to about 50,000 undocumented immigrants, according to the Migration Policy Institute. But the total immigrant population is much larger. Immigrants make up nearly one third of Nassau County’s workforce and one third of its small business owners.
Hempstead has large Hispanic and Central American communities. Freeport has significant Hispanic and Portuguese populations. Glen Cove has substantial Hispanic and Asian communities. Great Neck and Roslyn have large Asian populations. Garden City and the Five Towns have diverse immigrant communities.
At Spodek Law Group, we represent Nassau County immigrants from every community. We have offices throughout Long Island and NYC, including our Brooklyn office at 195 Montague St. We understand that a Salvadoran family in Hempstead faces different immigration challenges than a Chinese family in Great Neck or a Colombian family in Freeport.
Why Nassau’s 287(g) Program Is Dangerous for Immigrants
Before the 287(g) agreement, only federal ICE agents had immigration enforcement authority. If Nassau County police stopped you for a traffic violation, they couldn’t arrest you for immigration violations – even if they suspected you were undocumented.
Now that’s changed. Ten Nassau County detectives have been cross-designated as immigration officers. They can question you about immigration status. They can arrest you for immigration violations. They can detain you and turn you over to ICE.
This creates a chilling effect throughout Nassau County. Immigrants are afraid to call the police when they’re crime victims. They’re afraid to drive. They’re afraid to go to court for minor violations. Our Nassau County immigration attorneys are helping clients navigate this new reality.
