What Not To Do If You Are Under Federal Investigation

What Not to Do If You Are Under Federal Investigation

Getting that knock on your door from federal agents is scary stuff. Your first instinct might be to panic, but it’s important to stay calm. I’m here to walk you through some big no-no’s so you don’t make things worse.

Don’t Talk to the Agents Without a Lawyer

You have the right to remain silent and you should use it. Anything you say can be used against you. Be polite but firm that you won’t answer questions without your attorney present. This is not the time for chit-chat.[1]

Don’t Let Agents Search Your Home or Office

Federal agents may try to get your consent for a search so they can gather evidence. Politely refuse unless they have a warrant. Obstructing their investigation by hiding or destroying evidence is illegal, but you aren’t required to help them.[3]

Don’t Try to Explain Your Side of the Story

You’ll get your chance later if charges are filed. For now, keep your mouth shut no matter how much you want to defend yourself. Anything you say can come back to haunt you.[2]

Don’t Make Public Statements

Resist the urge to post on social media or speak to the press. This can compromise your defense strategy down the road. Let your lawyer do the talking.[4]

Don’t Try to Contact Witnesses

You could face obstruction of justice charges. Leave witness interviews to your attorney. Don’t discuss the case with anyone except your lawyer.[5]

Don’t Panic and Do Something Stupid

Take a breath. Contact a qualified federal defense attorney immediately. Follow their advice to protect yourself now and during legal proceedings.[6]

Don’t Forget Your Constitutional Rights

You have the right to remain silent, speak to an attorney, and be free from unreasonable searches. Know your rights and use them.

Don’t Try to Run or Hide

This will just make you look more guilty. Cooperate with authorities only through your lawyer.

Don’t Be Too Trusting

Federal agents are allowed to lie and manipulate to get information from you. Assume anything they say is a tactic.

Don’t Go It Alone

Navigating a federal investigation is scary and difficult. Lean on your lawyer for guidance each step of the way.

Don’t Lose Hope

With an experienced federal defense lawyer on your side, fighting the charges is very possible. Stay strong.

Being under federal investigation is serious business with high stakes. Having an advocate who understands the process is critical. They can protect your rights while developing the strongest defense. Don’t jeopardize your case by speaking without thinking. Stay calm and trust your legal counsel.

With smart choices, you can get through this difficult time and come out the other side. It won’t be easy, but you aren’t alone. We’re here to help.
