Prostitution is technically illegal in New York, including Westchester County. However, laws against it are rarely enforced against sex workers. Police sometimes still conduct stings and undercover operations, but arrests have declined in recent years as views on sex work have evolved.
Here are some key facts about the legal situation around prostitution in Westchester County:
- Engaging in prostitution is a Class B misdemeanor under New York law, punishable by up to 3 months in jail and a $500 fine if convicted.
- Patronizing a prostitute is a violation, not a full criminal offense, for the customer.
- Promoting prostitution or sex trafficking can lead to felony charges and much harsher sentences.
- Police in Westchester continue to occasionally run undercover sting operations leading to arrests, such as a 2019 bust in Mount Vernon.
